Short answer
A quality water softener installed by a licensed plumber in Utah County costs about $2,497–$3,797, depending on size and whether you add drinking water or whole-house filtration. Running it costs mostly salt: about 2–3 bags every 6–8 weeks for a family of 4.
What it costs, installed
These are our posted prices for Utah County. Every package is installed by a licensed Utah plumber and programmed for your water.
| Package | Installed price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Soft Water | $2,497 | 64,000-grain water softener |
| Soft + Drinking Water | $2,997 | 64,000-grain water softener + Under-sink reverse osmosis system with its own faucet |
| Complete Water | $3,797 | 64,000-grain water softener + Under-sink reverse osmosis system with its own faucet + Whole-house carbon filter for chlorine taste & smell |
| Bigger household | +$400 | 80,000-grain softener for 5+ people or 4+ bathrooms |
What changes the price
- Size (grain capacity). Bigger households and harder water need more capacity. Undersized units regenerate every few days, which wastes salt and wears them out.
- The control valve. A metered valve (like the Clack WS1) regenerates based on the water you actually use, not on a timer.
- Your plumbing. Most newer Utah homes have a pre-plumbed softener loop near the water heater or in the garage. Without one, there's extra plumbing to quote.
- Add-ons. An under-sink reverse osmosis system for drinking water, or a whole-house carbon filter for chlorine taste and smell.
- Who installs it. A licensed plumber costs more than doing it yourself, but you get correct sizing, programming, and someone who stands behind the work.

What it costs to run
Salt is the main ongoing cost. A family of 4 on Utah water typically goes through 2–3 forty-pound bags every 6–8 weeks, and bags usually run about $8–10 at local stores. If you'd rather not haul it, we offer salt refills at $49 a visit, up to 2 bags included. A drinking water system needs new filters about once a year.
How big a softener you need
Daily grains = people × about 60–75 gallons × your water's hardness in grains per gallon. A family of 4 on 20 grains/gallon uses about 4,800 grains a day, so a 64,000-grain softener runs about 10 days between regenerations. Households of 5+ or homes with 4+ bathrooms usually need 80,000 grain. To find your hardness, search for your city's annual water quality report.
Is it worth it in Utah?
Wasatch Front homes typically see 8–29 grains per gallon. The U.S. Geological Survey classifies anything over 180 mg/L (about 10.5 grains) as very hard. That's the crust on your faucets, the spots on your dishes, and the scale building up inside your water heater and appliances.
